UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunications System) is the most common 3G technology in use in the US. While maximum bandwidth is much higher, typical UMTS (provided by W-CDMA, or Wideband Code Division Multiple Access) bandwidths are in the 384Kbps range using the early R99 handsets.

In the late 2000's 3G has been enhanced to 3.5G using HSDPA (High-Speed Downlink Packet Access).
